  • Hid-N-Tangles | Laurel Reath

Our Artisan Michelle transforms a seemingly simple black & white drawing into a conversation starter every time she starts tangling.  Michelle transforms a seemingly simple black & white drawing into a conversation starter every time she starts tangling. Michelle Barker The Interview How long have you lived in Florida? We moved here on Easter, 2016. What do you like most about living in Florida? I love the skies in Florida. Beautiful and bright. I also love that I have started a new chapter here with my family, creating new relationships and memories here in Lake Nona. How did you get into your crafty specialty? A few years ago I had to heal from a broken foot and decided to keep my mind active by learning a different style of drawing. When I tried tangling (repeated designs, like in an adult coloring book), I couldn’t even complete one full drawing. It wasn’t relaxing or meaningful to me. I had to make it my own somehow. My first Hid-n-Tangle was an optical illusion of a cat that represented my daughter. How would your family and/or friends describe your artisanal crafts(wo)manship? My friends use the words “Wow” and “Beautiful”. My husband & daughter (in UCF art) can describe my style better than I can. They say that I “combine organic lines and shapes to create a work of art that can be appreciated for its fine detail as you search for the cleverly hidden elements you find along the way.” Take note, that my husband (a graphic designer) ALSO says that I’m crazy for trying to make perfect lines by hand when we own iPads with drawing software. Maybe I am! But I don’t want to surrender the method of drawing by hand. What do you think others underestimate the most about your craftiness? That one is easy! The time it takes to create a finished product. I get requests to make a specialized piece all the time. I would love to, but it isn’t possible. Each piece takes between 30 and 50+ hours. My process starts with brainstorming concepts of theme, then initial arrangements of a few designs. Next, I spend many days researching interesting images, styles, and perspectives to “show” the different hidden elements I want to include. How does your creativeness impact you? For myself, I found that true “rest” lies not in relaxing, but in losing myself in something peaceful. I’ve found that in drawing. It’s a time to do something for me, without the “mom guilt”. Where do you get your inspiration from? I think God just made me to be creative in a way that isn't like other people. Over time, I've gotten to do the most interesting things! I love encouraging people, making them feel special, and telling them they are significant. I think that is a gift. Creating Hid-n-Tangles is one way I can do that. Holly demonstrates a modern twist to the long-existing world of crochet. Her talent reflects in the detail as she doesn't use any go-by instructions, but her sole talent and experience. Holly illustrates the perfect example of why fibers will be around forever, doesn't she? Holly Scheele The Interview What do you like most about living in Florida? I love the warm weather and the beaches. In case Florida hasn't always been your home, where are you from and what do you miss the most? I grew up a military brat and have traveled the world my whole life. I married my husband during college and he was in the military also. When he got out of the military we tried out a couple of locations but love Florida the most. How did you get into your crafty specialty? My husband and I have 3 daughters so when they were little I decided I was going to make them hats for winter. From there it grew to friends and family and before I knew it I was making things for people everywhere. How long have you been executing your unique skill? I started crocheting in 2010. Do you share your artistic tendencies with others? Who and how? I have had people ask me how I make things and I am happy to teach them. Sometimes it's the basics, sometimes it's a specific stitch. I am always happy to share what I have learned. Is there any other skill set you are interested in acquiring or already carry out? As a fiber artist, I like to dabble in new crafts. What do you find most challenging, when putting your product out into the world? Finishing a new creation. I take my time and make sure I'm happy with it. Sometimes that means starting over. How does your creativeness impact you? I like to make pieces that I know will be with the recipient forever. Something that is special to them and has meaning. Maureen mastered the fusion of glass with her 15+ years of experience. Because of her extended knowledge and talent, we are lucky to feature Maureen's everyday and seasonal merchandise for you to enjoy. What else can be made out of fused glass, right? Maureen Smith The Interview How long have you lived in Florida? Since I was the age of 9. The year of 1969 to be exact. What do you like most about living in Florida? The weather, no doubt. How long have you been executing your unique skill? It has been approximately 12 years now. How would your family and/or friends describe your artisanal crafts(wo)manship? "Just amazing! Always so much fun to do every time we come to your house. All these joyful colors of glass to create with." What do you think others underestimate the most about your craftiness? More than likely it's the actual cost of glass that is used in the fuse glass business. Also, the detailed knowledge that you need to make kiln-formed glass and how to actually run a kiln (simply put a type of oven). Do you share your artistic tendencies with others? Who and how? Initially, I shared it with my family and immediate friends. I would make or trial different things and I would give them away to people who just seemed like they needed a pick me up. And one day I thought well I really should find an outlet to sell my products, so I can afford to buy more glass. I really enjoy the people in my immediate neighborhood who had taken an interest in learning fused glass and the monthly get-togethers that we have crafting. What else do you enjoy doing besides creating fun and unique products? Hanging with my grandchildren. Most specifically my latest grandson, Hudson. Learn more about fused-glass continue

Sarah's creations aim to adorn homes and enhance everyday life, ensuring each piece is a unique reflection of her distinctive touch. Founding Story Once upon a time, in the quaint little Lake Nona neighborhood of Laureate Park, a magical story began… (yes, a tiny tribute to Disney being so close by) It’s the story of Erin and Sarah, two friends and neighbors, who became closer neighbors (literally), even closer friends, and then founders of Laurel Reath. We’re all familiar with the saying ‘when life gives you lemons,…’, well friends, even during a crazy year of pandemic we found lemons and made some lemonade. 2020 was a trying year for us all and we saw so many people turn to new creative outlets just to make it through. It was during this time that we discovered we had so much more in common than living in the same awesome neighborhood, across the street from each other, showering our four-legged fur babies with attention and love. It was the shared passion for decorating our homes, the one place we were suddenly bound to for the unforeseeable future, that really brought us together. Erin had just purchased a new home and had a blank canvas to work on while Sarah was in the middle of her own outdoor remodel. We shared concepts, ideas, usages, and colors. We continued sending each other pictures of products that were useful and added decorative value to our homes. Then one day our friends (also neighbors) asked us to plan their baby shower (for the cutest baby boy, Hudson) and that’s when we realized, we have a true passion for unique decor and its personal touch. We understood that it was beyond just supporting our neighbors and friends during this challenging time, but involving them and their beautiful artisanal skills throughout that special day. That’s how the idea of laurel reath was born. A creative, skilled person is honored by wearing a laurel (w)reath as a crown. lau•rel reath noun /'la:r.el , ri:0/ • honors local artisans by showcasing their unique creations We identify the immense artisanal potential surrounding us here and we focus on building a community that inspires everyday accessories and accentuates its craftsmanship and quality.
