I have been living in Orlando for the past 7 years now. In case Florida hasn't always been your home, where are you from and what do you miss the most? I'm originally from Southwest Germany. The thing I miss the most, besides my family and friends, is the different cuisine, followed by the scenery and culture. How did you get into your crafty specialty? I'm a true DIYer at heart. When I see something I like, the first thought that pops up in my mind is, if I can create it myself. I enjoy knowing/finding out the process of how things operate, maybe my architectural background plays a role in that. How would your family and/or friends describe your artisanal crafts(wo)manship? They probably would say that my creative determination is endless. This is also one of the reasons why I wanted to found Laurel Reath. We want to share this opportunity with other artisans and spread the love for unique handmade creations. Where do you get your inspiration from? From anywhere really. Noticing something while outside or traveling. Browsing through Pinterest and the web in general. Is there any other skill set you are interested in acquiring or already carry out? In general, I'm always open to trying out new things. I also really love combining different acquired skills. What else do you enjoy doing besides creating fun and unique products? I like spending time outside. Especially now that we have a pool, it makes Florida in the summer so much more tolerable. Sandee Varela The Interview Have you always lived in Florida? Yes. For the last 35 years. What do you like most about living in Florida? The weather, even hurricane season to be honest...lol. And of course the diversity of cultures. How did you get into your crafty specialty? I lost my job due to covid, I needed to find something to do that would help ease my anxiety. I tried many things such as painting, pottery, resin but nothing made me feel what candle-making does. It's therapy, it's relaxing, and it calms me down. I felt amazing especially knowing that every candle that I made was made with pure love. There's a connection that I have with my craft. Battling anxiety is something I'm very open about, and I decided to put myself first and "Love". How long have you been executing your unique skill? I'm so excited because 2021 marks my one year already. Is there a special reason or meaning behind you picking this specific expertise? It all started as therapy. Like I mentioned before I battle anxiety and I don't know what I would do without it. How would your family and/or friends describe your artisanal crafts(wo)manship? HaHa!!! They probably would start by calling it OCD...lol. Then they would also mention that everything has to be done the right way. I just truly nurture my creations. Is there any other skill set you are interested in acquiring or already carry out? I'm really interested in learning about the creation of other products complimenting my candle business. I love the warm weather and the beaches. In case Florida hasn't always been your home, where are you from and what do you miss the most? I grew up a military brat and have traveled the world my whole life. I married my husband during college and he was in the military also. When he got out of the military we tried out a couple of locations but love Florida the most. How did you get into your crafty specialty? My husband and I have 3 daughters so when they were little I decided I was going to make them hats for winter. From there it grew to friends and family and before I knew it I was making things for people everywhere. How long have you been executing your unique skill? I started crocheting in 2010. Do you share your artistic tendencies with others? Who and how? I have had people ask me how I make things and I am happy to teach them. Sometimes it's the basics, sometimes it's a specific stitch. I am always happy to share what I have learned. Is there any other skill set you are interested in acquiring or already carry out? As a fiber artist, I like to dabble in new crafts. What do you find most challenging, when putting your product out into the world? Finishing a new creation. I take my time and make sure I'm happy with it. Sometimes that means starting over. Maureen Smith The Interview How long have you lived in Florida? Since I was the age of 9. The year of 1969 to be exact. What do you like most about living in Florida? The weather, no doubt. How long have you been executing your unique skill? It has been approximately 12 years now. How would your family and/or friends describe your artisanal crafts(wo)manship? "Just amazing! Always so much fun to do every time we come to your house. All these joyful colors of glass to create with." What do you think others underestimate the most about your craftiness? More than likely it's the actual cost of glass that is used in the fuse glass business. Also, the detailed knowledge that you need to make kiln-formed glass and how to actually run a kiln (simply put a type of oven). Do you share your artistic tendencies with others? Who and how? Initially, I shared it with my family and immediate friends. I would make or trial different things and I would give them away to people who just seemed like they needed a pick me up. And one day I thought well I really should find an outlet to sell my products, so I can afford to buy more glass. I really enjoy the people in my immediate neighborhood who had taken an interest in learning fused glass and the monthly get-togethers that we have crafting.
